In the film, Meryl Streep stars as Ricki Rendazzo, lead singer of a bar band. She's a bit of a free spirit. Ricki has three kids and a husband whom she left behind to move to Los Angeles to try and make something of her career. Now, years later, Ricki is trying to make things right with her children and her ex-husband. Her daughter Julie (Meryl's real daughter Mamie Gummer) is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and going through a divorce. In this movie, we see Ricki coming home for the first time in a very long time.
Directed by Jonathan Demme and written by Diablo Cody, we get to see Streep show off her singing skills once again. We've all heard her sing in Mamma Mia and Into the Woods. Writer Diablo Cody said that Meryl Streep learned to play the guitar for this role. Of course, I mean this is Meryl Streep we're talking about. Bow down.
The film also has a great supporting cast which includes Kevin Kline (Ricki's ex-husband), musician Rick Springfield (Ricki's band member), Audra McDonald and Sebastian Stan.
