Hoffman was found unconscious this past Sunday, February 4, 2014 at his home in New York City.
E! has all the latest details about the late actor. According to Police, the actor died of an apparent drug overdose. It's been said that Hoffman previously dealt with drug problems, but I don't think it's important at the moment to dwell on that.
Hoffman's family said in a statement to E! News "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers." (E!)
Many friends of the late actor who had worked with him came to pay their respects at a wake held in New York City this Thursday.
Philip Seymour Hoffman made quite a career for himself as a three-time Oscar nominee (The Master, Doubt, and War), and he actually took home an Oscar for his role as Truman Capote in the 2005 film, Capote. He has also been nominated for three Tony Awards for his work in the theater.
Hoffman's most recent work include The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I, which is due out in November. The movie is currently in post-production.
He will be missed, but not forgotten. My condolences go out to his family. Hoffman is survived by his longtime partner, Mimi O'Donnell and their three children.
