If any of you watched last season, then you knew that Apollo Nida, husband of TV personality Phaedra Parks was arrested back in January for charges of bank fraud. Nida has just been sentenced to eight years in prison in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Georgia, on charges of conspiring to commit mail, wire and bank fraud, according to Yahoo! TV. A representative form the U.S Attorney's office confirmed via TheWrap.
Apollo Nida, 35, pleaded guilt in May. Following his eight-year prison sentence, he will have five years of supervised release.
Yahoo! TV! says that according to U.S Attorney Sally Quillian Yates, in August 2009, Nida along with others obtained stolen checks, which included U.S Treasury checks and stolen checks from the pension fund of Delta Airlines. They obtained funds by filing fraudulent tax returns with the IRS. It has been reported that more than 50 victims had their identities stolen.
Reginald G. Moore, special agent in charge of the United States Secret Service, Atlanta Field Office made a statement. "Today's sentencing exemplifies impartial justice regardless of economic class or perceived celebrity status. Nida's sentence should be an eye opener for other like-minded criminals who scheme to steal victims’ identities, defraud them and ignore the consequences of their actions” (Yahoo!).
Nida was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims of his specific offenses. A second hearing is scheduled for July 17 to calculate the restitution amount.
This is just plain sad. Pitiful.
