New Music Tuesday: Nick Jonas

I was so excited to open my iTunes last week and see an upcoming album from Nick Jonas available for pre-order. The last we heard of him was last summer's hit "Levels". And just what has Nick Jonas been up to since then you ask? Well he's gone back into the recording studio, re-released his debut album, announced a tour with Demi Lovato called The Future Now Tour, starting June 24,  we can't forget about that episode arc on Scream Queens, and he's done another season of DirecTV's original show Kingdom (didn't know about that did we? Check it out). I'm exhausted just listing all that. Okay, I see you boo.

Before the tour with Demi, he'll be releasing a brand new album titled Last Year Was Complicated on June 10.  Here we have the first single from the album "Close" featuring Tove Lo. While "Levels" was a club banger, "Close" finds Nick Jonas slowing things down with a hard-hitting R&B sound. First Keke, then Ariana and now Nick is bringing us a more vulnerable and grown-up number. It's definitely far from what's being played non-stop on the radio right now, and I'm not complaining. I've always loved Nick's vocals ("I still get Jealous!"--and I still can't sing that song LOL) and this song is on point!

It's not a flashy in-your-face, upbeat, pop/dance track and I LOVE that it's not any of those things. I love the mature sound and I think it's a perfect sample of what's to come on the album. Nick spoke out on Twitter about the upcoming album,
      “I’ve been making this record for a year and a half… Pouring everything I have into it. Tomorrow night I’m gonna show the world the first single. When I first started making I thought I knew what it would be about… Then I had a breakup...It then became very clear what this thing would be about… And that I would need to dig really deep. Sh-t is too real sometimes… Reliving some of these real life experiences through this music is hard. But I know it’s important that I do it. I want to be an open book in my art.. The first song you’re gonna hear tomorrow night is about how I literally can’t open up and be vulnerable with someone. "

Damn. Sh*t just got real.
