Lana & Lilly Wachowski + via TV Guide |
According to TV Guide, Lilly (formerly known as Andy) was threatned to be outed by various news outlets (well known Daily Mail one of them) and explained because of that she decided to issue a public statement.
How messed up, how desperate for the latest and hottest story can be people be? Ugh.
48-year-old Lilly published an essay in The Windy City Times. "My sister Lana and I have largely avoided the press. I find talking about my art frustratingly tedious and talking about myself a wholly mortifying experience", Lilly wrote. "You know, when you're living as an out transgender person it's...kind of difficult to hide. I just wanted--needed some time to get my head right, to feel comfortable. But apparently I don't get to decide this" (TV Guide).
Nick adams, GLAAD's Director of Programs for Transgender Media said in a statement, "Journalists must learn that it is unacceptable to out a transgender person, in the same way it is unacceptable to out a person who is gay, lesbian or bisexual" (TV Guide). Indeed! The Matrix co-director "should not have been forced dto disclose her transgender identity before she was ready to do so", Adams said.
Looks like the Daily Mail has been in hot waters before for outing people against their will. In her essay, Lilly Wachowski noted the dangers of doing so by citing the Daily Mail's incident in which an elementary school teacher Lucy Meadows, committed suicide three months after the paper's article on her was published.
Daily Mail released their own statement in which they denied any attempts to threaten Lilly, and also denied that they outed Meadows or played any part in her death.
What is this world coming to?
Lilly also acknowledged how fortunate she is to have a loving support system as well the financial means to have doctors and therapists to help her with her transition.
From her essay:
"To be transgender is something largely understood as existing within the dogmatic terminus of male or female. And to 'transition' imparts a sense of immediacy, a before and after from one terminus to another. "But the reality, my reality is that I've been transitioning and will continue to transition all of my life, through the infinite that exists between male and female as it does in the infinite between the binary of zero and one. We need to elevate the dialogue beyond the simplicity of binary. Binary is a false idol." (TV Guide)

Lilly Wachowski is best known for directing the Matrix trilogy with her older sister, Lana. Together the sisters haved worked on V for vendetta, Jupiter Ascending, and created the Netflix show Sense8 (AH-MAZING! Go watch it. Right now).
