Sherman Hemsley, whom many of us knew as the hilarious George Jefferson who left TV audiences bent over in laughter, has died at the age of 74.

It was confirmed by police In El Paso, Texas, where Hemsley was living while not working in LA (E!). Hemsley was in the Broadway show, Purlie when he landed the role of George Jefferson, neighbor to Archie Bunker on All In The Family. Jefferson was a strong, black character who pushed boundaries going toe-to-toe with Archie Bunker. His character along with his wife Louise or "Weezie" (Isabel Sanford), were so popular that their own spin off show The Jeffersons was created. The show ran a decade on CBS, from 1975-85.

For the next two decades, Hemsley kept up with the TV gigs, his most renown role as Deacon Earnest Fry on NBC's Amen. Hemsley has also made several guest appearances on shows, The Love Boat, Family Matters, Lois and Clark, Family Guy, and Sister, Sister.
