"An exploration of the life and music of Miles Davis" (IMDb).

Not only is Don Cheadle portraying the iconic musician in the lead role, but this will be his directorial debut as well. In an interview with Shadow & Act, Don Cheadle sat down and talked about the process of creating the film. On directing the film he commented "I'm trying to steal from everybody...But I'm hoping to come up with a language that is mine, that's specific to my take on this material" (Indiewire).

From what I've read this project appears to be a labor of love for Cheadle. In 2014 he launched an Indiegogo campaign for the Miles Davis biopic, hoping to raise $325,000 towards the film's budget. The acclaimed actor also produced the film and co-wrote the script.

Recently, we've seen a lot of movies that have followed the lives of some of music's most popular and influential personalities. While it's hard not to remain skeptical, I think because Don Cheadle has had such an expanded role in bringing the film to life, we can expect something different and enjoy it. Cheadle has called the film "unconventional". In the interview he speaks on the story of the film and the journey we are expected to see.

"It looks at Miles' silent period, him sort of coming out of that silent period and joining up with this Rolling Stone reporter and a young trumpet player to steal back his music. And it runs parallel with the storyline of Frances Taylor Davis, who he was in a relationship with for 10 years and was sort of his muse and the love of his life" (Indiewire).

Interestingly enough, there was a rumor in 2014 that Zoe Saldana was to have a part in the film. In his interview with Shadow & Act, Cheadle cleared things up and stated Saldana was not involved in the picture at all.

I think I really would like to see this film. Miles Davis has left such a huge mark on the history of 20th century jazz. And I have mad respect for Don Cheadle for taking on so much and getting the movie finished.

Miles Ahead opens today with a limited release. So you'll have to hit up IMDb or your local theaters to check where it's playing.
